Dr. Ophir Almog, holds a PhD in the field of remote sensing and geodata science from the Technion (Israeli Institute of Technology) in the faculty of civil and environmental engineering.
Military Service and Leadership: Over the course of two decades, from 1998 to 2019, he ascended to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and assumed various roles, ultimately serving as the Chief Scientist Officer (CSO) of the spatial & visual department in the Intelligence forces in the IDF. As a technology initiator and R&D leader, Ophir oversaw a multitude of projects and algorithms development spanning optical sensors, photogrammetry technologies, multi-source image registration, spectral signature interpretation, spatial databases, and the manipulation and structuring of geo-data.
His extensive expertise extended to areas such as geo based artificial intelligence, big data, deep learning processes, vectors matching, thermal image interpretation, and multi-source visualization and simulation. In this role, he mentored and guided a team of 30 engineers and played a pivotal role in establishing a GIS (Geographical Information System) program in 100 schools across Israel.
Ophir’s influence extended to academia, where he served as a lecturer at the Technion for more than two decades, sharing his knowledge and experience. He offered courses on GIS programming, remote sensing, thematic mapping, Geo data structuring, and wavelet analysis. His impact was also felt through his mentorship of six master’s students, who delved into areas such as segmentation, multispectral calibration, spectral domains for improving material classification processes, thermal interpretation, and elevation data manipulation.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation: In 2020, Ophir took a bold step forward, co-founding “Momentick,” a groundbreaking startup with a mission to detect and quantify various materials and land covers, including solids, liquids, and gases. His leadership as Chief Scientist Officer at Momentick focuses on utilizing remote sensing and computer vision to detect and quantify GHG emissions through multi/hyperspectral images in the SWIR (Short Wave Infra-Red) range. Under his guidance, Momentick has spearheaded pioneering efforts in unsupervised machine learning and artificial intelligence, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
Recognition and Awards: Throughout his illustrious career, Ophir has earned numerous accolades and recognitions, including the prestigious Life Work Award for teaching and mentoring in Israel’s Intelligence Corps in 2019. In 2017, he received the Head of Adjutant General Branch (General) Award for Best Projects in Manpower in the IDF. Ophir was twice honored with the Best Technion Lecturer Award in 2010 and 2006, and his paper presented at ISPRS2006 received the Best Paper Award, underscoring his remarkable contributions to the field of remote sensing.
